How to enable subtitles in MPC / Media Player Classic

Watching movies with Media Player Classic is great, but enabling the subtitles can be very frustrating! Here’s how to get subtitles working in MPC.

  1. Make sure that in the options you select Directshow Video -> VMR7 (renderless) or VMR9 (renderless) on the Playback -> output screen. This is required for displaying subtitles. External subtitles will only work with VMR9, at least for .MKV files.
  2. Make sure the subtitles have the same name as the movie (except for the extension).
  3. Right-click on the movie while playing it, go to “Subtitles”, enable them and select the ones you want to use if multiple are available,
  4. Be aware that .MKV files can have the subtitles embedded in the movie.
