Map wifi strength in your home or office

A wireless internet / network connection in your home or office location is great. Especially when the access point stands right next to your notebook…. Sometimes you don’t want to sit next to the router but you require some more freedom, but moving away from the access point reduces the signal strength. But how does the signal strength changee throughout your workspace?
Ekahau HeatMapper is a free wi-fi coverage mapping site survey tool. It’s a tool that enables you to simply map the signal strength throughout your home or office.

  1. The first step is to open a map of your workspace. This can be anything that more or less matches your workspace. If it’s an image file and it’s good enough for you, then it’s good enough for the program.
  2. The tool logs all access points available and measures their signal strength on your current location. So you walk around in the room and at the same time click with your mouse on your map to indicate your current location.
  3. When you’re satisfied you did measurements everywhere you wanted, the program translates all these measurements into a coverage map. Green indicating good coverage, red indicating bad coverage.
