Kingdom of Heaven

Kingdom of HeavenSome things never change. During the Crusades, in the Middle Ages, the Christians and Muslims fought about the holy city of Jerusalem. Kingdom of Heaven is located between the second and third Crusade. To make the situation more interesting, a hero (Orlando Bloom) is created. Balian of Ibelin travels to Jerusalem during the crusades of the 12th century, and there he finds himself as the defender of the city and its people. And let’s not forget to put in a beautiful woman (Eva Green).
It’s a nice movie, but for my feeling a lot of scenes were missing, so maybe the 45 minutes longer “Director’s Cut” is better. I give it a 7.

James Bond: Casino Royale

Eva Green

James Bond is back. Daniel Craig is the new 007. Literally. In Casino Royale you get to know how James Bond became 007. Bond movies have always been created to be seen in the cinema. Also in Casino Royale, there are lots of special effects within great action scenes that suck you into the movie and leave you with a smile.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

Borat Sacha Baron Cohen, alias ALI G, alias Borat, has made a new movie, or a “movie film” as Borat calls it. This time the character Borat leaves his home country for a trip to America in order to “Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”.

After an enormous media campaign and a good experience with Sacha Baron Cohen his productions in the past, I was a bit disappointed with “Borat”. It was funny, let’s make that clear, but there wasn’t a lot of deeper thought it. It wasn’t any better than an ordinary episode of Borat or ALI G. I give it a 6.

Zwartboek (Black Book)

coppermine.jpgFinally a Dutch movie on World War 2 where with a little nuance in the German characters. This movie by Paul Verhoeven is not about fighting the Dutch fighting the Germans. That’s only the context in which a story is situated about people in a war situation. Carice van Houten and Sebastian Koch play a great role as Rachel Steinn and Ludwig Müntze. Besides them the playing is extraordinary good for a Dutch movie. The only shame is that there are some locally well-known actors put in the movie who are known, but aren’t great actors.

I’ve got only one thing left to say about Zwartboek (Black Book). Go see this movie! I give it an 8.
